A real commitment to diversity
A diverse and inclusive organization reflects the community it serves. Diversity doesn't happen on its own – it's a value that has to be lived in how an organization does business.
At Vancity, we strive to make true diversity in the workplace a reality. Vancity has a higher percentage of visible minorities and women, when compared with other companies, plus a long history of gay-friendly employee policies. We reflect the communities we serve. And, consider that we are the only major financial institution in Canada with both a female CEO and Board Chair.
A 2007 national assessment of diversity in major corporations by Corporate Knights Magazine put Vancity in first place for visible minority and female representation in the boardroom and the executive suite. Our overall diversity score was 71.9 per cent and we were only one of two Financial Institutions to make the top ten list.
Vancity has also been recognized as a leader in diversity with a spot on the Canada’s Best Diversity Employers list for 2008. The award recognizes the nation’s leaders in workplace diversity and inclusiveness among several employee groups: women, visible minorities, people with disabilities, Aboriginal Canadians, and gay and lesbian employees.
Diversity is also important in our member outreach and marketing. In another award winning strategy in 2003, we reached out to gay and lesbian members with a bold marketing strategy that proudly embraced the diversity of relationships and families in all their forms. We run ads and produce marketing material in different languages including Punjabi, Mandarin and Cantonese. By taking a triple bottom line approach, we live our values and commitment to working with communities to help them thrive and prosper.
Achievements like this don't come overnight. But with hard work, commitment and passion, meaningful change can happen. At Vancity, we value diversity and seek to realize it from the branches to Head Office.
