A leader in sustainability
Sustainability - the idea that you shouldn't take out more than you put in - is a pretty basic concept for a financial institution, particularly one operated by and for its members. That's why Vancity believes our job is about more than growing our members' earnings. It's about investing those earnings to make a difference and grow a better world.
We don’t just talk about being green, we strive to live it. That attitude
won us at least four major awards in 2007. The Urban Development Institute has
honoured Dockside
Green, our Victoria Harbour redevelopment and Canada’s first LEEDS
Platinum project. We’re achieving the best possible ranking in leading-edge
environmental design and are proving that sustainability is not only practical,
it’s profitable. Vancity’s cutting-edge Simon Fraser University
project, Verdant, also won an award from the Urban Development Institute in
2007. Verdant homes boast geothermal heating, transit passes for residents and
costs 20 percent below regular rates.
And, last year’s National Credit Union Innovation Award went to Vancity’s
Carbon Neutral Program, our commitment to be carbon neutral as an organization
by 2010.
Most recently, Vancity was selected by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers as one of "Canada's Most Earth-Friendly Employers" for 2008. We are proud to be named as an exceptional employer that has demonstrated forward-thinking environmental initiatives that actively involve employees, placing environmental awareness at the heart of their corporate culture.
